Maritime History

Originally built in 1780 as the merchantman Berwick, the vessel was purchased by the Royal Navy and refitted as the heavily armed flagship HMS Sirius. She achieved immortal historic fame in 1787 by leading the legendary First Fleet under Captain Arthur Phillip to establish the first European settlement in Australia. Serving as the colony's vital lifeline for supplies, her dramatic shipwreck off Norfolk Island in 1790 remains one of the most significant events in early Australian history.
