Maritime History
Launched in Brest in 1669, the Soleil Royal was a majestic 104-gun first-rate ship of the line and the flagship of King Louis XIV's French Royal Navy. Named in honor of the "Sun King," she was renowned for her magnificent baroque ornamentation and formidable firepower, playing a leading role in major 17th-century naval engagements such as the Battle of Beachy Head in 1690.
