Endeavour is a J-class yacht built for the 1934 America’s Cup by Camper and Nicholson in Gosport, England. Yacht Endeavour model was built for Thomas Sopwith who used his aviation design expertise to ensure the yacht was the most advanced of its day with a steel hull and mast. Yacht Endeavour model was 130-foot (40 m) and launched in 1934 and won many races in her first season including against the J’s Velsheda and Shamrock V. Failed in her America’s Cup challenge against the American defender Rainbow but came closer to lifting the cup than any other until Australia II succeeded in 1983. Endeavour II was a 1936 J Class sailboat and unsuccessful America’s Cup challenger. Thomas Sopwith ordered it, Charles Ernest Nicholson designed it, and Camper and Nicholsons built it (Yard number 433). Endeavor II was decommissioned in 1968.
In a 1994 review Richard Sherwood wrote that the Endeavour 40 “is a big, comfortable cruiser intended for extended trips.
As a result, note that both fuel and water capacity are high, ballast/displacement ratio is 36 percent.
However, the cockpit, like most center cockpits, is high and therefore dry.” Steve Knauth wrote a review for Soundings Magazine in 2008 and stated, hull design features a modified fin keel with a skeg-protected rudder.
Nevertheless, the forefoot is slightly flatter than a traditional wineglass hull, moreover, and the 13-foot beam is carried. well aft for form stability and interior volume. Above all, Sail area is 743 square feet, with a 338-square-foot main and 405-square-foot foretriangle. The center cockpit is farther aft than some designs, and it’s high and dry.”
