Mercator ship model History

Launched in 1932 in Leith, Scotland, the Mercator was designed by Antarctic explorer Adrien de Gerlache as a training vessel for the Belgian merchant fleet. Named after cartographer Gerardus Mercator, it became a symbol of scientific and cultural achievement.
